Damian Lazarus @ Verboten

Damian Lazarus: “The aesthetic is clear: to push the boundaries of music and art—while having fun”

If Crosstown Rebels is one of the defining underground dance music labels of this millennium—and, for the record, it is—then its head honcho, Damian Lazarus, is one of that scene’s prime movers. Last month, the imprint released 10 Years of Crosstown Rebels, featuring house and techno from the sonically diverse likes of Soul Clap, Pier Bucci, Tiga, Amirali and Mathew Jonson; on Friday, March 14, he’ll be joined on the decks by a collection of his labelmates when the all-new Verboten club hosts the Rebel Rave affair.

When you first kicked off Crosstown Rebels, did you harbor any expectations that the label would still be around a decade-plus later?
I never really thought about it. When you begin a label like this, supporting underground music, it begins more as a hobby—one that you dream of turning into a workable business. It would be interesting to learn the average life span of labels in the electronic market, but I would suspect it’s around five years. Within our first few years, we had three distribution companies go bust owing us a lot of money, and each time I felt such a strong belief in the label’s future that I persisted and kept the dream alive. I’m happy to have reached this milestone.

Part of your record-biz background includes the creation of the City Rockers label. Do you think that experience helped prepare you for running Crosstown Rebels? Or do you feel that Crosstown Rebels’ longevity is more strongly attributable to the strength of the artists that you’ve chosen for its roster?
Even before City Rockers, I started a label which was funded by FFRR; it was called Mind Horizon. This was where I first cut my teeth, in label terms. I think the experiences of that and City Rockers gave me a good basis to start out on my own, but you can never prepare for what’s in store. There are always so many interesting twists and turns with every release, and always so many different people and situations to handle. Trends come and go, as do people, and it is important to keep your reputation intact at all times. The strength of the brand plus the talent of the artists generally equals longevity and success.

There’s a wide range of artists on Crosstown Rebels, but do you feel that they—and you—share some sort of common aesthetic? And is that something you’ve consciously developed?
I like to think—and am told by others from time to time—that the label has a certain undefinable quality. There’s some kind of X factor, that when you hear a track, somebody might say, “It sounds like a Crosstown record.” I think we move through different periods of exciting times in the underground, and sometimes these styles might become more populist—but I am not one to cash in on these scenes. I prefer to help develop them in the beginning.

One thing I’ve always liked about Crosstown Rebels is that it’s maintained an “underground” vibe—however you’d like to define that—while putting out music that most anybody vaguely into dance music can relate to. How do you manage to straddle that line?
I think it must be down to my personal tastes, as I am the one and only person who decides what to release. I guess I have always balanced my love of, and interest in, both underground and more mainstream music, and you can hear that in my Lazpod radio shows. From the beginning, I realized there were many cool underground labels that specialized in a particular sound, but very few that you could depend on in a broader sense.

Do you look at Crosstown Rebels as being more than a record label nowadays? It almost seems to be a collective or movement of sorts, as much as it is a label.
Yes, I think it’s grown beyond just being a label; it’s more a creative collective of DJs, artists, producers, event organizers and promoters, filmmakers and fashion designers. The aesthetic is clear: to push the boundaries of music and art—while having fun.

It must have been difficult to distill ten years and scores of releases down to one anniversary compilation. How did you go about deciding what would end up on the comp?
Our label manager, Leon Oakey, and I discussed it all at length over a few drinks. I think we came up with a very solid and enjoyable three-CD selection which gives a great overview of the last decade.

You’re coming to NYC to helm a Rebel Rave bash to celebrate the comp’s release—who’s joining you in the booth?
We have the amazing Francesca Lombardo; the mighty Venezuelans, Fur Coat; and new Crosstown signing Ida Engberg. This will be the opening of the new Verboten club in Brooklyn.

That’s right! Have you ever broken in a new club before?
I don’t think I have, so this will be an honor. There are some excellent clubs in New York, and I feel I am forever checking new ones out and seeing where I feel most comfortable playing, so this is a great opportunity to see how this one is at the very beginning. I saw the place as an empty shell and could feel the potential vibes, so I’m positive about how it will be.

Do you expect that you’ll be putting together a 20 Years of Crosstown Rebels someday?
The longest I ever really planned ahead with the label is around 12 months—so I have absolutely no idea!

Rebel Rave is at Verboten Friday, March 14. 10 Years of Crosstown Rebels is out now; catch Lazpod at lazpod.com.

Kele Okereke - Candy Flip (CRM124)

Back on Crosstown Rebels after the barnstorming ‘Heartbreaker’ EP at the end of last year, Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke once again shows he’s a dancer at heart and a truly versatile beat maker. Kicking off with another killer A-side ‘Candy Flip’, Kele builds an infectious track as he works a dirty low bassline with his own deep gravelly vocals. ‘The New Feel’ follows on with dark bass stabs making way for a bouncing groove, haunting chords, and filtered vox with an anthemic feel. FCL’s remix treatment gives a classic, uplifting dimension to ‘Candy Flip’ while final original ‘Come To Me’ is a master class in raw, bass heavy grooves with a modern touch and fresh vocals from Jenny Bastet.

From the propulsive rhythm sections of Bloc Party’s Platinum-selling debut album ‘Silent Alarm’  to guest vocals for artists like The Chemical Brothers, dance music has always been the underlying influence for Kele Okereke. Having spent ten years making records in studios working with some of the greatest producers in the world, Kele is now launching his solo assault on house music and leaving a distinctive mark in the process on new home label Crosstown Rebels.

With the ‘Heartbreaker EP’ gaining critical acclaim across the board and ‘Candy Flip’ about to win over yet more dancefloors, Kele’s new sound is no flash in the pan. There are more EPs in the pipeline for Crosstown as well as DJ dates all over the world, so watch this space.

FCL is the Belgian powerhouse production duo comprised of Red D, owner of We Play House, and young DJ/producer extraordinaire San Soda. Both individually and together they have had a major impact on dance music in the last few years, notably with their ubiquitous version of E.S.P’s ‘It’s You’ - a sell-out vinyl on We Play House reaching cult status and later seeing a digital release on Defected due to popular demand.

Psychemagik - Black Noir Schwarz (CRM122)

Back with another serious heavy hitter, Crosstown Rebels presents the latest from dream team Psychemagik, ‘Black Noir Schwarz’ - their first original production not to be self-released and already championed by Pete Tong on BBC Radio 1. A club weapon of psychedelically charged, electro-tinged epic proportions, the original is driven by the monster wonky bassline, dark and sultry vocal (from Renata De Sutter) and freaky synths. Spooky keys and chords, and grinding distorted bass bring the track to even murkier depths. Featuring remixes by the legend that is Tensnake and ex Audio Bully Minéo, make no mistake ‘Black Noir Schwarz’ is set to destroy all dancefloors in its wake.

UK dance music heroes, avid vinyl collectors and masters of the re-edit, Danny McLewin and Tom Coveney aka Psychemagik first entered the public consciousness with their supreme, balearic pop and 12” disco edits. Since then the UK duo has since released an impressive array of highly acclaimed original productions and remixes. Recent remix projects include Bryan Ferry, Haim, Boy George, The Villagers, Azari & III, Metronomy, Chapel Club, Kauf and Mirror People. As well as the superb ‘Magik Sunrise’, another of their much lauded compilations, the self-released ‘Diabolical Synthetic Fantasy’ featured in the top 10 compilations of 2013 at most good record shops bestsellers lists globally including Rough Trade, Phonica and was named the No1 Compilation Of the Year at Piccadilly Records. The have just returned from a world tour of Australia, USA, Mexico, Asia and Europe.

Tensnake needs little introduction. A household name since his dancefloor smash ‘Coma Cat’ on Permanent Vacation, the Hamburg born DJ and producer Marco Niemerski has since been in ever-increasing demand. His music effortlessly transcends genres and his forthcoming debut album ‘Glow’ is set to cement his reputation as a major talent. For Crosstown Rebels, Tensnake delivers a full-bodied and rolling ‘Black, Noir...’ rework.

Ex Audio Bully Tom Dinsdale aka Minéo has been buried away in the studio for the past couple of years working on music for his new solo project. With his latest release ‘Turn Out The Lights’ flying high on Hot Creations, Mineo arrives on Crosstown Rebels and turns in a totally fresh take on ‘Black Noir Schwarz’, revelling in a P-funk style groove and filtered vox.

Psychemagik Feat. Renegade - Black Noir Schwarz Bonus Mixes (CRM122)

After dropping Psychemagik’s latest killer ‘Black Noir Schwarz’, Crosstown Rebels will deliver a bonus remix package featuring Deaf Pillow, Leo Zero and Extended Play remixes. Their first original production not self-released, ‘Black Noir Schwarz’, was an unadulterated slice of Psychemagik magic - a psychedelically charged, electro-tinged club weapon, driven by a monster wonky bassline and dark, sultry vocal from Renata De Sutter aka Renegade. Up first, Deaf Pillow plunges the track into a deep and hypnotic groove followed by Leo Zero who delivers an acid-flecked cosmic interpretation while Extended Play give a deep solid groove based remix.

Ida Engberg - Devil Dance (CRM123)

Next up on Crosstown Rebels is a classy deep tech cut from one of Sweden’s finest exports - Ida Engberg. Making her debut on Crosstown Rebels with ‘Devil Dance’, Ida proves her undeniable power to move the dancefloor as she combines her tough yet groovy style with a sexy dose of acid. B-side ‘Silhouette Of A Ghost’ is a housier affair, with a lighter bounce yet injected with some filthy distorted bass.  Featuring reworks by the legendary Mr G and Ida’s close cohort Adam Beyer, the ‘Devil Dance’ package is essential for any DJ box and best served up on a system that’s worthy.

Ida Engberg is a global techno megastar. DJing from an incredibly young age and working her way up from local bars in hometown Stockholm to residencies in Marbella followed by season in Ibiza 2005, Ida then turned attention to production and by 2007 had releases out on Get Physical and Pickadoll. With European tour dates pouring in, Ida came to play her first Drumcode gig in 2008 and later joined the ranks of the juggernaut collective in 2011, often playing alongside Drumcode founder Adam Beyer and also making her mark with releases on the label. The dancefloor domination has continued with sets at the most prestigious clubs and festivals in the world. 2014 will see Ida kick off a residency for Verboten in NYC plus appearances at Damian Lazarus’s next Rebel Rave and 9th annual Get Lost in Miami. Ida is to follow this up with a series of EPs for Crosstown Rebels so watch this space.

Delivering two mixes of ‘Devil Dance’, prolific UK techno veteran Mr G bestows his unmistakable raw and bass heavy thump and groove with his ‘NY Dub’ and ‘NY Tribal Dub’. Mr G is a legend by anyones standards - a stronghold in the industry as much as in his pioneering days with The Advent. Nowadays Mr G is found lighting up the catalogues of Rekids, Running Back, Bass Culture and Contemporary Scarecrow as well as releasing on his own imprint Phoenix G.

Fellow Swedish techno royalty Adam Beyer delivers a suitably loopy remix of‘Devil Dance’ - clunking and chunking up the percussion and with a groovy little suction motif, Adam once again proves he’s a true master of rhythm. Launching the now seminal label Drumcode in 1996, Beyer is the kingpin of the Stockholm scene and as well as a plethora of releases on labels Planet Rhythm, Truesoul and of course countless on own labels Drumcode and Code Red, Adam has also recently created a stunning live act with Cari Lekebusch.

Subb-An Feat. S.Y.F. - Say No More (CRM121)

Subb-an is back with one of the most hyped tracks to land on Crosstown Rebels in recent times. A  collaboration with Cedric from Azari & III under new moniker S.Y.F (Starving Yet Full), ‘Say No More’ shows the wunderkind producer on a wholly satisfying song-based tip. A killer weapon for any peak-time dancefloor, it’s a bumpy infectious ride with a wonky edge - steeped in the soul of Cedric’s vocals rolling over immaculately crafted grooves. The ‘Terrace Dub’ drops most of the vocal and takes a deeper darker turn, made with the DC-10 terrace in mind. Crosstown favourite Mathew Jonson takes over the B-side with a languorous, sprawling rework, weaving a squelching bassline into the bubbling soundbed with a backdrop of cosmic synths.

Subb-an’s rapid rise to prominence as a DJ, producer and one of the most exciting new British live acts of recent years is testament to his hard work, natural talent and wholehearted commitment to electronic music. Named as DJ Magazines ‘Best Breakthrough DJ’ in their 2011 end of year awards, Subb-an’s prodigious studio talents have seen him release on Crosstown Rebels, Visionquest, Spectral, Saved, My Favourite Robot, his own flourishing imprint One Records and deliver much lauded remixes of Jamie Woon, Lana Del Ray, Noir & Haze and Hollis P Monroe the past couple of years. A protege of Damian Lazarus and Crosstown Rebels, Subb-an joined the crew on the 10 Years world tour last year playing multiple dates as well as featuring in the other-worldly Day Zero event this year and last. The hotly anticipated debut album is due in September on the label.

Fresh from delivering a package of ‘Blurry Remixes’ from Mathew Jonson’slatest album ‘Her Blurry Pictures’, Crosstown Rebels can’t get enough of this man’s studio masterstrokes. Jonson is one of the most well-respected names in electronic music with past releases on M_NUS, Perlon and his own Wagon Repair label. Jonson has recently focused on his Cobblestone Jazz outfit (an improvised live 3 piece collaboration techno project) and the extended four-piece, the Modern Deep Left Quartet as well as Midnight Operator (a raw, rough, uptempo partnership focusing on dancefloor bombs), each of which have earned him widespread success.

Pezzner & Amina - Exit (CRM120)

Up next on the decade strong Crosstown Rebels is class live act Pezzner who joins forces on ‘Exit’ with vocalist and co-producer Amina. ‘Exit’ is a charged and emotional journey with a edge of darkness, where the power of raw electronics meets the mystical and sultry tones of Amina’s incredible Bjork-esque voice. ‘Pipes’ sees Pezzner go it alone with a mixture of organic sounds and shakers wrapped up in one hypnotic groove as mellow dubby textures flow into fluid, abstract melodies. Continuing Crosstown’s tradition for head-turning remixers, up steps Hotflush boss and dubstep pioneer turned master of versatility,  Scuba. Delivering his take on ‘Exit’ with elastic bass and an expanding soundbed of jarring chords and alternating synth lines, the result is a suspense filled and soaring sonic ride.

Seattle’s Dave Pezzner wants to tell stories and feed the brain with his dancefloor focused productions and this mantra is finely displayed here as well as on previous album works, ‘The Tracks Are Alive’ (Freerange Records, 2010) and ‘Last Night In Utopia’ (Systematic Recordings, 2013) and EPs for Crosstown Rebels off-shoot Rebellion, Dirtybird, Ovum and Anjunadeep. Highly regarded across the board as a producer and live act, his work has been described as “lush and tense with a transcendental twist” and his live shows and DJ sets have moved the dance floors of some of the most renowned venues including Space Ibiza, Rex Club in Paris, Womb Tokyo, Fabric London, Cielo New York, and Chicago’s famed Smartbar.

Amina is an Italian Egyptian heir to a mystical culture she grew up through the memories left by her mother, a musician and composer, and the exploration of multiple instruments and later an obsession with poetry. Fate led her to meet Dave Pezzner in 2011 and this gave rise to a passion project that fused Amina’s poems with a collaborative mix of eclectic and harmonic sounds that brought Amina’s lyrics and voice alive within Pezzer’s three-dimensional sonic imagery, full of tension and transmission…

Scuba needs little or no introduction. As the head of Hotflush Recordings, one of the most illustrious and genre-bending labels of our times and with a history steeped in the UK dubstep scene, Paul Rose aka Scuba and SCB has been residing in Berlin since 2008 and is now a future-facing figurehead in electronic music with a sonic style reaching far beyond his dubstep roots.
